The Best Homemade Potion Fizz Recipe
If you have been following along with Kuddly Kids for a while you will already know how much we love Potion Play and creating childhood magic for our little people. You will often find us foraging in the garden for new ingredients for our latest potion.
But the most important part of potion making (other than making a mess and having fun) is the FIZZ! Its just wouldn't be quite the same without the fizzy bubbly goodness that it brings to potion play.
We also love testing our potion play range and using the incredible Fizz from our beautiful brands. Can't go past Wild Mountain Child & The Little Potion Co.
But sometimes we just feel like getting crafty and making out own potion fizzy formula and potion ingredients. (Keep your eyes peeled for our DIY potion ingredient recipes coming soon).
This recipe has been trialled and tested by my kids and I over many potion making sessions in the garden. We hope you love it!
Ingredients:
- Citric Acid
- Cornflour
- Bi-Carb Soda (Or Baking Soda)
Equal parts of Citric Acid, Cornflour & Bi-Carb.
- Colouring of your choice - We prefer to use powder paints or food colouring.
We make a big batch and store in an airtight container so we always have potion fizz ready for our next potion play session.
Just add water and your favourite potion ingredients to activate your fizz! Our favourite ingredients to add are Dried Flowers, Crystals and Bio-degradable Glitter.
Method:
This is the easiest recipe going around!
Step One: Mix equal parts of citric acid, Bi-Carb and Cornflour.
We like to use kitchen scales to weigh each ingredient and get the measurements just right.
Tip for a super smooth Fizz...make sure you run the ingredients through a sifter to remove any lumps.
Step Two: Add your colour!
If you are using powder paints start by adding a tea spoon to each cup of fizz mix. Test a small portion of fizz by adding water to make sure you are happy with the colour. Keep adding powder paint till your cherubs are happy.
However if you are using food colouring, skip this step until you are ready to make your potion. We recommend only adding it right before you need the fizz.
Step Three: Make a batch & keep it safe!
We store our Fizz in an airtight container, but don't leave it too long as your fizz is its fizziest in the first couple of weeks. If your fizz gets a bit lumpy from moisture, just crush it up with a spoon.
Step 4: Start mixing those potions!
You don't need much fizz to keep your little ones entertained. Pull out all your favourite ingredients and add them to your potion platter. Our favourite potion platters are the Small Tamarind Sorting Bowl & the original Tamarind Sorting Bowl.
Tips:
Powder paints work best for colouring your fizz. If you prefer to use food colouring, make sure you add it slowly to prevent your fizz starting its fizzy dance before you get a chance to make your potions.
Does only adding water to your potion feel a bit boring? Try adding some flood colouring to your potion water! Best way to add liquids to your potion? We 100% with our hearts recommend the Mini Scoop! Best way to slow down potion play and prevent your kids from 'flooding' the potion with water.
Finally...our last (and possibly best) tip...add some dishwashing liquid to your potion liquid 'aka water' to get the most incredibly fluffy foamy potion!

P.s Looking for a citric acid free potion fizz recipe? Just remove the citric acid and use vinegar instead of water. You can jazz up your vinegar by adding some food colouring and pop the vinegar in a spray bottle or dropper if your kids are sensitive to the smell of vinegar.
